  1. This is one exhausted dog.
She spent Saturday afternoon playing with three other dogs and then spent Saturday night and most of Sunday playing with her buddy Lola.
To top it off she got her feet wet in the Puget Sound not once but twice over the weekend.
Penny was equally as exhausted but she chose to pass out under the bed where it was a little cooler.

  2. Sunday was a bad day to be an overgrown laurel bush in our backyard.

While I was finishing up my new bed divider I decided this thing needed to be cut back to fence height. After I got about halfway through giving it it’s new flat top look Sara decided the whole thing just needed to come out.

The only thing left is the tree sized trunk. Looks like I just found an excuse to fire up that chainsaw my Dad gave me a couple of visits ago.

  3. Here’s a few shots from this weekend’s project.

We decided to cut the width of the flower bed along the right side of the yard (looking out from the house) in about half and put in a proper divider between the yard and the bed.

After back-to-back trips to the Home Depot we had the 82 retaining wall blocks we needed to put in the divider. I got the first 53 put in Saturday afternoon and put in the last 29 Sunday morning.

It’s too long to fit into a single picture but I think it turned out pretty nice. Now we just need to get some sod to fill in the part of the bed that is now officially yard.

  4. I think I finished this up about a month ago but never got around to taking and posting a picture.
This was sort of the tucked away / forgotten corner of the backyard off the left side of the deck (if you’re standing in the yard looking at the back of the house). It was filled with lava rock, a bird bath missing the bath and a loose brick edge that had been overgrown with grass.
I cleaned out all the lava rock, put down Preen, laid down some of that weed prevention fabric and then built a proper divider out of retaining wall stones.
It’s still kind of the forgotten corner but at least it looks decent.

  7. Brilliant Pot Luck Idea

A sign-up sheet went around the office this morning for a pot luck lunch next Friday. When I signed up there were four people that had listed “I don’t know” and one that had listed fruit platter in the “What I’m Bringing” column. I joined the “I don’t know” camp to avoid commitment but here’s what I’m thinking:

    Build your own Mini BLTs.

A couple of bruschetta size pieces of bread, slice of tomato, piece of romaine, piece of pepper bacon and mayo.

How would this not be the greatest thing at the pot luck?

You’ve got the general awesomeness that is bacon with none of the soggy bread that a pre-made sandwich with tomato slices gets you.

    It’s nothing but upside potential.

Now there are only two real questions:

    1. Do I want to put in the time/money/effort?
    2. Can I drive an entire platter of cooked bacon to work without eating it all while sitting in traffic?

  8. Sunday Soups: Slow Cooker Chile Verde

I forgot to get a picture of this (I blame the Sara-scored-a-goal post soccer game beers) and as usual the photos attached to the recipe on allrecipes.com don’t do it justice.

I’m going to break away from my usual format a little bit and just go with this:

    Make this.

It’s easy, delicious and you can pretty much do anything with it.

    • Use it as a filling for tacos and/or burritos? Delicious.
    • Mix it in with your eggs in the morning? Delicious.
    • Put it in a bowl with some refried black beans and eat it like stew? Delicious.

    Here are couple hints/tips/tricks:

    • Make sure you buy boneless pork. This was the second time a recipe called for boneless pork and I accidently bought bone-in country style ribs. Cutting out the bones makes me hate life.
    • This came out on the spicy side. I was only able to find medium heat green salsa. If you want to tone it down I’d either find mild salsa or sub green chiles for the jalapenos. Also, buying seven 5oz cans is ridiculous. I used two 16oz jars and it came out great.

  10. A Morning Email Exchange
Sara: Well i made the shake. Not delish but feels healthy. For what that’s worth
Brian: Not the most appetizing color I’ve ever seen. I kind of wish my Flying Bike glass would have spontaneously combusted in protest over being filled with something healthy instead of beer for it’s first use.
